IP (intellectual property) law is an area of law such as copyrights, trademarks and patents which protects property. Much like a recorded deed can protect your land, an issued patent or trademark can protect your new invention or logo.
Patents take a central importance in IP law. They are obtained for many reasons. The most obvious reason is to prevent copy-cats from stealing your invention. But there are other important reasons for patenting an invention. Patents and even their applications, can be licensed and sold for revenue. Patents can provide credibility for individuals wanting to invest in your company. Last year over 60,000 patents were obtained by individual inventors and companies. If you have a house or something of value worth protecting, would it not be wise to take steps to do so? With an increasingly competitive economy, taking such steps makes more sense then ever.
Trademarks are another central area of IP law. The fact that many products in the market are successful is often directly due to the trademark found on the product. In other words, people often make their purchasing decisions based on the mark associated with the product. Without trademark law, people would be free to use marks belonging to others on their products. This would cause confusion among consumers who come to expect a certain level of quality with an associated brand.
