Here are just a few: Revenue: Licensors gain revenue from the license in the form of up-front payments or future royalties. Freedom to Operate: A licensor may out of necessity have to license a patented invention if the licensor wants to practice the technology covered by the claim(s) of another patent. In such an instance, the licensor might enter into a cross-license with the other patent holder in order that both patent holders can use each other's patented technology. Patents can be transferred to other people just as a car can be sold to another person. A transfer will require what is called an "assignment" of the patent. There are specific rules to follow for a valid assignment. Recording of the assignment is also highly recommended. As with licensing, there are various reasons why someone might want to transfer a patent such as obtaining revenue from the sale. In addition, an invention may be under a contractual obligation to assign/transfer an invention to his/her employer. Licensing is discussed fully in my book:
